JASTECA Institute of Management - (JIM)


JASTECA Institute of Management (JIM) is the Management Training arm of JASTECA. JIM was formed to provide Training to Sri Lankan business organizations – especially corporates – for their supervisory, operational management and senior management cadres, through assisting the returned participants to disseminate their training results in local industry: helping to organize training programs in their companies and inviting them to be resource personel in the JASTECA Institute of Management.

JIM conducts both public and in-house programs on a wide spectrum of topics as follows: Japanese Techniques of Management, Leadership, Motivation, Supervisory Skills Development, Human Resource Management, Secretarial Skills, Production Management, Marketing Management, Project Management etc. Management training programs are conducted in English whilst programs focusing on operational managers and supervisors are conducted bilingually in English/Sinhala. JIM also undertakes to deliver customized training programs to suit the internal in-house training needs of its clients. JIM enlists the services of high caliber resource persons of proven track record with required academic excellence and adequate practical exposure. While one day seminars/workshops have proved very successful, JIM also organizes short duration programs of a few days.

JIM has trained about 2500 participants during the past two years alone. With JASTECA’s emphasis on inculcating Japanese Management Techniques amongst Sri Lankan business entities, JIM has vigorously conducted in-depth training programs in 5S, Kaizen, Quality & Productivity Enhancement etc.

Safety training for National Carrier
A training workshop on Earthquake & Natural Disaster Survival was conducted by JASTECA Institute of Management for Sri Lankan Airlines. It was held on April 22nd — equipping airline staff with critical safety awareness and practical emergency response skills. The training was facilitated by the long standing JASTECA resource person Mr.Mahasen Wijesekera who is a subject matter expert.

JASTECA conducted 5S audits at Flintec, Koggala & Katunayake premises
A 5S audit was conducted by JASTECA at Flintec, Koggala & Katunayake premises to assess workplace organization and efficiency, recently. During the assessment, key observations were made regarding workspace arrangement, cleanliness, and adherence to standardized practices. The audit also highlighted best practices implemented by the team and areas where further enhancements could be made to optimize productivity and maintain a structured work environment. The findings and recommendations were shared with the management & relevant teams to support continuous improvement efforts and reinforce a strong 5S culture within the organization.

Mastering the Art of Project Management
We successfully concluded the training programme, Mastering the Art of Project, on 31st January 2025, which was a resounding success. Organized by the JASTECA Institute of Management and facilitated by Mr. Saman Kandanearachchi, a renowned expert in the field, this training session offered participants in-depth knowledge of project management. The program not only covered essential principles and best practices but also enriched participants with real-world insights drawn from the trainer’s extensive experience. Furthermore, the interactive approach and practical applications enabled attendees to grasp key concepts effectively, equipping them with valuable skills to manage projects efficiently in their respective fields.

Occupational Health, Safety & Wellbeing
We successfully concluded our Occupational Health, Safety & Wellbeing training on 17th January 2025, which was a resounding success! Organized by the JASTECA Institute of Management and facilitated by Mr. Mahasen Wijesekara, an expert in the field, this comprehensive program provided participants with valuable tools and strategies to foster safer, healthier, and more efficient workplaces. The training covered essential topics such as health and safety fundamentals, stress management, employee well-being, ergonomics for comfort and productivity, fire, chemical, and machinery safety, hazard identification and elimination, as well as fall protection essentials. A heartfelt thank you to all participants for their active engagement and contribution to building a culture of safety and well-being in the workplace!

Scientific Decision Making | Key for Sustainable Corporate Growth
On 18th November 2024, we conducted a highly interactive & experimental training session on scientific decision-making, which turned out to be a resounding success! Participants were enthusiastically engaged throughout the session, diving into key topics like assessing decision-making skills, identifying types of problems, and using managerial approaches to minimize human compromises. They mastered tools such as root cause analysis, fact-gathering, and creative problem-solving while learning to prioritize actions effectively. By addressing symptoms versus actual problems and fostering creative decision-making, the session empowered participants to make informed, impactful decisions.

Integration of Japanese Management Standards with ISO 9001- QMS, ISO 14001-EMS and ISO 45001
We concluded an incredible training session on 29th October 2024 at Renuka City Hotel, where participants explored how key Japanese management methodologies—such as Gemba, Toyota Production System (TPS), Hoshin Kanri, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Jidoka, 5S, and Kaizen can be seamlessly integrated into the frameworks of ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System), and ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety).

The program, organized by JASTECA Institute of Management and facilitated by Mr. Kanishka Perera, a senior resource person of JASTECA and industry expert, emphasized how these time-tested Japanese methodologies can drive improvements in quality, sustainability, and safety. Attendees discovered practical strategies to foster continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and organizational excellence in every area of business.
5S Awareness session for Vidullanka PLC
The 5S Awareness session for Vidullanka PLC, organized by the JASTECA Institute of Management, took place on 11th October 2024 at the Sasakawa Centre, Colombo 3. This session aimed to enhance participants' understanding of the 5S methodology—Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize), and Shitsuke (Sustain). Facilitated by Mr. Kanishka Perera, the session covered key principles and practical applications of 5S in the workplace to improve efficiency and productivity. Attendees engaged in interactive discussions and activities that emphasized the importance of maintaining an organized and efficient work environment.

Customized JASTECA Management Development Program
JASTECA was delighted to organize a five-day customized development program for Sri Lanka Telecom PLC. The program consisted of two parts, where 10 participants were trained both locally and overseas. The local training was held for two days, covering a wide range of topics including Understanding the characteristics of Japanese management in successful cooperations & Best Practices, Sustainable practices & Leadership.

The overseas training was conducted in Thailand from December 18–22, 2023, facilitated by our fellow alumni association, ABK AOTS Thailand. The participants had the opportunity to visit the following factories:

Toyota Motor (Thailand) Co., Ltd.
Advanced Info Service Public Co. Ltd. (AIS)
Cultural visit: The Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Based on the feedback received from the participants, the program is regarded as an overwhelming success. JASTECA remains committed to conduct exclusive programs aimed at the Sri Lankan corporate sector, with the purpose of elevating our corporates to world class standard.

5S audit-gap analysis (JASTECA 5S audit criteria)
JASTECA organized a four-day training program for Sundaram Lanka Tyres Ltd. on 5S audit-gap analysis (JASTECA 5S audit criteria) Ms. Sakunthala Goonetilleke facilitated the training. The program covered a wide range of topics, such as how to sustain the 5S implementation, advance 5S application in manufacturing companies, discussion and feedback on GAP Audit findings, and a master plan for 5S implementation and continuity.

5S, Lean Manufacturing, TPS & Factory Automation Training Program & Study Tour in Thailand (Exclusive program for Sri Lanka)
The 5S, Lean Manufacturing, TPS, and Factory Automation Study Tour was a huge success, concluding on November 11, 2023. 15 applicants succeeded from a demanding pool of applications for the program.

This comprehensive 5-day program, from 6th to 11th November, included a blend of classroom sessions and five factory visits to observe advanced systems for manufacturing tools, 5S, Lean Manufacturing, TPS, and factory automation. The main objective was to create a robust platform for cooperation with Thai companies, simultaneously equipping the participants with practical knowledge.

Business Innovation Workshop
"Business Innovation Workshop", organized by JASTECA Institute of Management, wrapped up as a fruitful knowledge-sharing session at Galadari Hotel on the 5th of October 2023. The programme was facilitated by Mr Aloka Gunsekara, a member of JASTECA, Strategic Advisor, Entrepreneur-in-Residence - Antler, Singapore and Prof G Certified Strategist. Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
The seminar, titled "Transforming Challenges into Opportunities", organized by JASTECA Institute of Management, wrapped up as a fruitful knowledge sharing session at Galadari Hotel on the 21st of June 2023. The seminar was aimed at developing skills and competencies through a real-life case study on how a company showcasing stellar performance during a challenging period.The programme was facilitated by Mr. Mahinda Saranapala, a life member & a past president of JASTECA, Managing Director of Kelani Cables PLC. Mr. Saranapala also plays a pivotal role in heading many associations. It was truly a knowledge sharing session for those who had the keen interest in leveling up their own organization or the organization they work for. The seminar was graced by the participation of over 45 representatives from 20 leading organizations in Sri Lankan corporate sector.

Leadership An Art of Possibility
The seminar, titled LEADERSHIP: an Art of Possibility, organized by JASTECA Institute of Management, wrapped up as a tremendous success, at Galadari Hotel on the 18th May 2023. The seminar was aimed at developing leadership skills of the corporate sector managers. As a leader in the corporate & Japanese management training sector, we believe that it is an important duty to nurture the prospective leaders to lead the corporate world into a promising level, to ensure the growth of our Nation. The programme was facilitated by Dr. Sarath Buddhadasa , a life member of JASTECA. Being a corporate trainer in local & international organizations, with over thirty-five years of experience, Dr. Buddadhasa is a business consultant, academic adviser, researcher and a writer. The Program assisted those who were ready to level up their leadership role by gaining exposure to a wide range of up-to-date knowledge and practical tools. The seminar was graced by the participation of over 70 representatives from 23 leading organizations.

We, the Japan Sri Lanka Technical & Cultural Association, (JASTECA) are the sole Alumni Association of The Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS), Japan in Sri Lanka. Our Association is formed of returned trainees from scholarship programs offered by AOTS. Thus, the returned, enlightened trainees are eligible to become members of Japan Sri Lanka Technical & Cultural Association (JASTECA).
